Positions

The laboratory welcomes undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other research professionals. Specific positions are advertised on this page as they become available, but please also see the information below.  Because of the volume of interest in positions in our laboratory, we are unable to respond to all inquiries.

Postdoctoral fellows: A prospective postdoctoral fellow who has recently completed or is about to complete his or her Ph.D. is welcome to apply here. Applicants should submit a letter of introduction, CV and the names of 3 faculty references. If an opportunity that matches your qualifications and the needs of the laboratory becomes available, you will receive an acknowledgment by email.  All postdoctoral fellows are strongly encouraged to explore and pursue external fellowship support.  If you have an external fellowship already, please state this in your letter of introduction, along with the name and details of the fellowship.

Prospective UCB graduate students: Students should apply for graduate study at Berkeley through the UC Berkeley-UCSF PhD program in Bioengineering or another program with which Dr. Kumar is affiliated, such as Biophysics, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, or Chemical Biology. The laboratory does not directly admit or sponsor Ph.D. students outside of UC Berkeley’s centralized application process, and unsolicited inquiries about PhD positions within the group will, in general, not be answered.

Current UCB graduate students: Students who would like to complete a rotation in the laboratory should e-mail Dr. Kumar directly.

**Due to COVID-19 lab density restrictions, our lab will not be taking on undergraduate researchers until further notice.**

Undergraduates: Students interested in pursuing undergraduate research with Dr. Kumar should apply here.  Applications are checked periodically, and they will receive a response if there is an opportunity to discuss. Undergraduates are strongly encouraged to seek external support through URAP, Amgen Scholars, or another formal program.  Unsolicited inquiries by email will, in general, not be answered.

Other: Positions for technicians and senior Ph.D.-level researchers are specifically advertised as needed. However, candidates are welcome to apply here. You will receive a response if a position become available.
